How to: Apply for a PAN Card

(We are starting “How To” series to help young investors start investing and also aiming for better & higher financial inclusion in India)

PAN Card is issued by the Income Tax Department of India and PAN Card number is a 10 digit alphanumeric code/number.

It is one of the most important document in any financial transaction. Well it’s not only important for Financial Transaction but also serves as a photo identity proof which may be required when you buy a new sim card as well.

Details on a PAN Card:

  • You full name
  • Your fathers name
  • Your birth date
  • PAN Number
  • Your photograph
  • Your signaturePAN Card

Where will you need a PAN Card?

  • File Income Tax returns
  • Opening a depository account
  • Buying and selling of tangible assets
  • Large cash transactions (above 50K)
  • Buying Gold of more than 5 lakh
  • Applying for an IPO
  • Etc.

How can you apply?

Offline Application:

Take print out of the forms from any of these websites:

  • http://law.incometaxindia.gov.in/DITTaxmann/IncomeTaxRules/pdf/Form49aE.PDF
  • http://www.utiisl.co.in/form49a.htm

(Take care to use the exact type of paper the Income Tax Department specifies – A4-size 70 gsm paper only to avoid rejection.)

Basic details are required in these forms and it’s quite simple to fill the form.

Online Application:

One can also apply online from any of these websites:

  • https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/
  • https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/index.html/

In online application you will have to print the acknowledgement received, sign and affix the photograph and collate and submit documents.

You will be able to locate online a nearest center where you will have to physically submit these documents.

Documents required:

To apply for PAN card you will have to submit 2 documents one as a proof of identity and one as a proof of address.

A list of few of the documents which would work-

Proof of identity-

  • School leaving certificate
  • Bank Account Statement / Passbook
  • Ration Card
  • Voter Identity Card
  • Driving License
  • etc.

Proof of address-

  • Electricity Bill
  • Telephone Bill
  • Bank Account Statement / Passbook
  • Passport
  • Voter Identity Card
  • Driving License
  • etc.

Fees involved:

Indian residents (individuals or any other mode opted for) – Rs 94/-

Non Resident Indians – Rs 744/-

    Very Good information. Apart from the above, just like to add that Online applications cost upto 96/- for Individuals. There are few more Items that are accepted as POA and POI which could be seen here.As mentioned above there are also private players like http://www.thepancard.com where you can apply online and get good customer support.

    So plz tell me that how many days it will take to be made.

    I am from northeast of India that is from Dimapur, Nagaland.many people in our colony want to apply for PAN card, but how do I give payment and to whom and how much we have to pay and lastly how many days it may take till I get my new PAN Card.     You can apply through below mentioned website and pay through online payment gateway. Even i have applied and received the duplicate pan card with in 14days.

    It’s really an amazing news for all of us. Nowadays, pan card is the most important need and valuable document. So hope this Promises made by Income Tax Dept will work out. Since, Passport promises are still on the way. let’s see what happens.
